Colourful, multi-purpose, hand-woven ... our Mare, Dune & Port Louis baskets possess all these characteristics and are sure to be a hit for storing small objects or for putting your houseplant in the spotlight. Each basket is

hand-woven from seagrass,

which creates a unique and artisanal character. Moreover, this material was chosen because the designs are subtly inspired by the setting sun in the seaside dunes, giving you the feeling of being on holiday at home for a bit.

Production process

Sustainably harvested seagrass comes from coastal areas and shallow waters. Artisans collect it by hand to avoid damage to the seagrass bed and surrounding ecosystem. After harvesting, they thoroughly clean the seagrass to remove sand, salt and other impurities. It then dries, often in the sun, so that it becomes preserved and ready for further processing.

After drying, professionals sort the seagrass by length, thickness and quality. For specific aesthetic applications, they bleach or colour the material if necessary. Experienced craftsmen then start weaving baskets, using traditional techniques that have circulated within families for generations. This meticulous handwork gives each basket a unique character and a high-quality finish.

Care instructions

Seagrass baskets are not only durable, but also a beautiful and natural addition to your interior. With a little care, you can enjoy them for years.

To clean your basket, use a soft brush or a hoover with an attachment to remove dust. Any stains? Then use a damp cloth with a little mild soap. Be careful not to get your basket too wet - dry it quickly afterwards in a well-ventilated area to avoid mould.

Also make sure you store the basket in a dry place, out of direct sunlight. This will prevent discolouration and drying out of the material. Preferably do not use the basket for heavy items, to keep its shape.

With these simple maintenance instructions, your basket will continue to look beautiful and retain its function well.

Properties

  • Sustainable: seagrass can be harvested in an environmentally friendly way without damaging ecosystems, unlike some other materials that require intensive farming or deforestation.
  • Lightweight & sturdy: decorative items made from seagrass are lightweight, making them easy to move, yet sturdy enough to carry heavy items.
  • Supporting cultural heritage & community: the production of seagrass baskets not only provides employment for local artisans, but also contributes to the preservation of traditional weaving techniques and valuable craft skills passed down from generation to generation.
  • Allergy-friendly: seagrass is generally hypoallergenic, meaning it is less likely to cause allergic reactions compared to synthetic materials.
